Cabernet Franc Seminar

Ahh…Cabernet Franc! The grape that doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves. France is the largest producer of Cabernet Franc. Most famously, it is one of the five red grapes that make up Bordeaux red blends.  Learn how Clau de Nell in the Loire’s Anjou region, bio-dynamically produce their Cabernet Franc.  Italy is the second largest producer of Cabernet Franc. When grown in Tuscany, wines that have Cabernet Franc in the blend are referred to as “Super Tuscans” as this grape is not indigenous to this region.  An example of this wine comes from Lodivico Antinori, 26th generation winemaker from Italy’s famed Antinori family.  When grown in an even warmer climate like California, Cabernet Franc makes fuller-bodied wines showing deeper, riper fruits such as blueberry, blackberry and plum notes. Pride Mountain plants their Cabernet Franc on some of their steepest hillside terraces and slopes where the weak soils are able to adequately stress this vigorous grape variety limiting its shoot growth and concentrating its flavors into tiny berries.

Bordeaux, the storied land of great Cabernet and Merlot blends, is a home of Saints. Along the Right Bank you have that historic medieval town of Saint-Emilion with its velvet-textured wines full of red fruits and savoriness. Across the rivers, on the edges of the Left Bank, you have the great classified growths of the hamlets of Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe.  Each Saint has his own personality traits and in this tasting seminar we will get to know all of them intimately.  So spend an afternoon with some wines worth meditating over. This will be a sermon of pleasure.

Tenuta Il Poggione Wine Dinner

Tenuta Il Poggione was one of the first wineries to market Brunello di Montalcino wine as early as the 1900’s, and one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.  Strong believers in bio-diversity, by planting different crops in the vineyard, they farm using sustainable principles and pick everything by hand.  This practice along with strict green harvesting results in the production of excellent quality wines even in more challenging vintages. Alessandro Bindocci is the 4th generation of his family to work in the wine business and the 2nd generation to be following in the footsteps of Piero Talenti, mentor to his own father Fabrizio and one of the founding fathers of the DOCG.

Join Alessandro and Chef Jeff Michaud, a James Beard Award-winning Chef (Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic).
